The first trailer for the new Smurfs movie has been released.
Smurfs is a new animated musical movie that will see Rihanna voice the character of Smurfette. Coming from director Chris Miller and co-director Matt Landon, the film will be released in theaters this coming July.
“When Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette (Rihanna) leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe,” says the synopsis.

What else do we know about the Smurfs movie?
Smurfs is based on the characters originally created by Belgian comics writer and artist Peyo. The script comes from Pam Brady, while Rihanna also recorded original songs for the project and serves as a producer on it. Jay Brown, Ty Ty Smith, and Ryan Harris also serve as producers.
Along with Rihanna, the voice cast of the film includes Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman.
Miller (not to be confused with Christopher Miller of the Spider-Verse franchise) previously directed 2007’s Shrek the Third and 2011’s Puss in Boots. He has also worked in the animation department on films such as 1998’s Antz, 2001’s Shrek, 2003’s Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, 2004’s Shrek 2, 2005’s Madagascar, and 2019’s The Addams Family.
Raja Gosnell made two live-action Smurf movies a little over a decade ago: 2011’s The Smurfs and 2013’s The Smurfs 2. A third live-action film was in development for a time; however, Sony instead decided to reboot the franchise with an animated film that was released in 2017, Smurfs: The Lost Village. The owners of the Smurfs brand then struck a deal with Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies in February 2022 to create a number of new animated Smurf films, with the 2025 movie being the first one.
Smurfs will be released in United States theaters on July 18, 2025, from Paramount Pictures.
