There’s nothing worse than a disorganized jewelry box or storage system. Have you ever “lost” a piece of jewelry, only to realize it was just hiding in a weird spot where you had put it away? Most jewelry boxes are made simply to store jewelry items and the remedies haven’t really changed over the past several years. We think the typical system of pull-out drawers and divided slots is not the best, so we’re here to drop some knowledge that will have you reorganizing your entire jewelry wardrobe, even down to your last toe ring.
If you want to do this the right way, we suggest starting out good ole Marie Kondo style and getting out ALL of your jewelry, elegantly dumping it all onto the cleared table. Begin by categorizing everything into groups by style — necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, charms and misc. For storage ideas, our biggest tips on where to go from here are as follows:
Jewelry Organizing Epiphany #1 — Throw out those boxes your jewelry comes in
I bet you had to fish jewelry out of tiny boxes and it probably was a pain! The biggest faux pas we see with people’s jewelry storage systems is collecting these insignificant boxes and storing jewelry in them. Most of the time you’re unaware as to what is inside them, and this often promotes not wearing the pieces. We suggest getting rid of these boxes — you can keep the little dust pouches or zipper pouches if you’d like, but otherwise toss them!
Jewelry Organizing Epiphany #2 — Out of sight, out of mind
We are firm believers in needing to see everything you have, all at once. This allows you to accessorize easily each morning and it also keeps things organized, while inciting to continue to keep it that way. A great solution for this would be a big cabinet-like jewelry box that can hold a very large amount of jewelry (we like this one). Or creating a tablescape using tiles from flooring stores and displaying your jewelry neatly (almost like a jewelry store).
Jewelry Organizing Epiphany #3 — Go big or go home
A small jewelry box restricts, confines and limits. A big jewelry box, well, you know what they say — bigger is always better. Having extra space to grow your collection while keeping your storage solution the same over the years is a great thing! It has also been proven to help promote any jewelry addiction, which we stand behind.
Jewelry Organizing Epiphany #4 — Categorize & Colorize
Once you have your setup going, to organize even further we suggest keeping jewelry categories separate — rings with rings, necklaces with necklaces, etc. Want bonus points? Color-categorize by putting all your red pieces together (think rubies, garnets) followed by orange, yellow, green, blue, and purples. Save a section for black stones like onyx and black diamonds, and also diamonds and other colorless stones. Anytime we “rainbow-fy” anything, it is extremely satisfying.
Jewelry Organizing Epiphany #5 — Little, tiny zip lock bags are vital
Jewelry is tiny, hence easy to lose. Any type of jewelry storage has the ability for items to get lost within the cracks and crevices. We highly suggest buying a pack of teeny tiny zip locks and using them to organize things like extra earring backs and chains. They’re also ideal for packing pieces when traveling.
