It’s no secret that layering necklaces is a hot trend right now. Sure it looks easy — put on a necklace, add another, and then another. But is it though? Have you ever tried layering necklaces before? Wow, so hard. There’s like an artform to it — and then there’s the tangling factor — and the differing lengths. Ugh — way harder than first thought.
I’m about to reveal some necklace layering secrets I’ve been stashing away for years. Follow these easy rules and you’ll be on your way to the coolest, chicest, non-messy neck mess you’ve ever seen.
1. Start with a basic
This is the only time you’ll hear me ask you to be basic. I bet you already have a classic chain — you know the ones that usually come with a pendant or charm, typically 16″ or 18″ in length — yes, those! This will act as your foundation to your layered look. I suggest hanging sentimental charms from this chain; pieces from your travels, your favorite colors, anything that makes you happy. Please don’t wear something your ex-boyfriend gave you.
2. Add differing lengths
A key to a successful necklace look is wearing different length chains. Have you ever seen someone wearing 10 necklaces, all the same length? No, because it would be a tangled ball of hot garbage. I suggest buying these key lengths: choker, 16″, 18″, 20″, 24″, 30″ and in various chain styles, which leads to our next rule…
3. Add unique chain styles (differing textures)
More texture equals less tangle! Tattoo that into your mind, or on your body, that’s fine with me. But seriously, this is so important. There are so many unique chain styles out there, we encourage you to adopt some favorites and rock them. Figaro, mariner, ball, rope, snake, herringbone, paperclip, rolo…these aren’t just random words, they’re chain style names. Google them, learn them, love them.
4. Finish off with some symmetry
So you have your basic chain with some charms, a totally different style chain that’s either longer or shorter…now repeat this however many times you’d like. Once you’ve gotten a look you love, before you call it — add one more finishing touch, a bib-style, festoon, or station necklace. Symmetry is important with layering, so this style of necklace adds dimension both vertically and horizontally. We like a Cleopatra-style necklace for this or even a diamond-dangle station necklace.
