Artist Matthew Eberle, who served as the on-set lead of the visual effects for the DCU feature Superman, offered details of a gruesome scene that was ultimately left out of the theatrical version of the movie. The scene in question featured David Corenswet’s Clark Kent / Superman and Krypto.
Superman’s cut opening scene had Krypto battling abominable snowmen
Eberle took to social media and revealed that an alternate version of the opening scene of Superman featured a pile of dead abominable snowmen, but it was ultimately left behind on the cutting room floor. “Originally… when Krypto is dragging Superman, they pass by several dead abominable snowmen… Superman says ‘Krypto, you have to stop killing abominable snowmen’… Hit the cutting room floor. I was there,” Eberle shared in the post and added a behind-the-scenes photo from seemingly taken on the set. (via ComicBook)
The visual artist’s post seems to solve a mystery about the promotional material that came out before Superman’s premiere. In May, various outlets and social media handles reported that a Superman toy hinted at a Fortress of Solitude creature. It had what looked like white fur and sharp teeth. Given the new revelation, it is safe to presume that this creature was meant to be an abominable snowman.
Notably, this isn’t the only scene featuring Krypto that the filmmakers decided to leave out of the movie. Earlier, Sara Sampaio, who portrays Eve Teschmacher, told Jake Hamilton that a scene in which Ultraman hits Krypto performed terribly with the test audience and was subsequently discarded in the editing room. Sampaio’s co-star, María Gabriela de Faría, who plays Angela Spica / the Engineer, said, “It’s not okay. You can’t punch a dog.” She then proceeded to justify her character’s actions toward the said dog, “No, I did not punch the dog. The dog attacked me first.”
Additionally, a scene with Krypto and Edi Gathegi’s Michael Holt / Mister Terrific also didn’t make it to the screen.
