The halcyon years of the Washington Color School, over half a century ago, still represent the deepest fine arts footprint ever made by our (then) regional artists, elevating most of them to (now) a global presence. There’s currently a terrific show at Hemphill showcasing the works of two immensely talented artists: Leon Berkowitz and Wayson Jones.Jones’ work first came to my attention via my good friend Lou Stovall, when Stovall selected Jones in 2010 for the October Members Show in Hillyer Art Space.I’ve been following Jones’ work for many years, and in 2018 I wrote about his participation in that year’s Superfine…

Horror is a big part of Austin, Texas. It’s not just the wonderful Fantastic Fest that unfolds every September, but the genre has been a major part of every SXSW I’ve ever attended. Even the Headliners here have an adults-only edge to them from the gore of “Death of a Unicorn” to the murderous betrayals of “Holland” to the malevolent scheming of “Drop.” I saw a little less indie horror than usual, and what I did see ran the gamut in terms of quality, but there’s a definite sense that SXSW horror wants to be “elevated.” It can’t just be…
When documentaries center on one person, breadth is often sacrificed for depth. Thankfully, for the most part, three docs at this year’s SXSW are structured less in a way to speedily run through the greatest hits but to create a space for their subjects to meditate and ponder at their leisure. I’m grateful to have walked into a theater to see these films, knowing next to nothing about the subjects featured, and now walking away…

Three of the more purely enjoyable films to play at this year’s SXSW didn’t premiere with star-studded red carpets at the Paramount, launching at other venues around the wonderful city of Austin. You’re going to want to watch for all three of them. After the premiere of Matt Johnson’s wonderful “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,” one could hear the buzz move through the entire city. Standing ovations are kinda rare at SXSW, and even rarer for quirky mockumentary comedies like this one, but Johnson has crafted an immensely likable motion picture, a hysterical love letter to creative partnerships,…

Sotheby’s and Pace Gallery are currently negotiating over a deal that would see the auction house make a significant investment in the mega-gallery. While nothing has been inked yet, and the details appear to be very much in flux, a source close to the negotiations told ARTnews that it was not an acquisition, but a “joint venture between Pace and Sotheby’s that will be multifaceted and has many elements. Let’s call it a ‘new model.’” The news, while potentially momentous, is not entirely unexpected for those in the industry. Rumors have swirled for weeks that Pace has been in talks…
