Lumin Wakoa, a rising painter whose art was part of a quest to better learn how to see the world around her, has died at 43. Her death was announced by her gallery, Harper’s, on Monday. Her husband Hendrik Gerrits wrote on Instagram that she had been battling brain cancer. “She could summon wildlife by sheer force of will – to adventure with Lumin meant swimming with wild dolphins, playing with manatees, and spearing gigantic lobsters,” he wrote. “Most importantly, she was the most loving, joyful, and patient mother. She taught me the daily skill of sitting still to delight…

The following is the Final Jeopardy clue for today, Monday, July 7. If the last two weeks are any indication, we need to celebrate even two-day Jeopardy champions. Look! Up on YouTube! It’s maybe the strangest piece of American superhero media ever created! It’s It’s a Bird … It’s a Plane … It’s Superman. And If you thought turning the sequel to Joker into a musical was weird, you ain’t seen nothing yet.More than half a century before Joaquin Phoenix played a Crown Prince of Crime with a song in his heart, Broadway hosted its very own singing Superman. He debuted on Broadway the same year that Adam West’s Batman took over the TV airwaves. But while Batman became an instant pop-culture sensation on ABC, It’s a Bird … It’s a Plane … It’s Superman closed after just three months.…

The first trading card set under Onyx’s new agreement is Vintage, featuring several on-card autographs. Image source: Lance Fischer, President of Onyx The sports card market continues to be an extremely hot area for memorabilia investors, but the biggest dollars aren’t spent on collectibles—they’re on licenses. So when an underdog organization suddenly gets a big-name license, it’s a surprise. That’s what happened earlier this year when Onyx Authenticated was part of a shocking announcement – MLB Players Inc. signed…

“Uncertain Scaffolding” by Aaron Kagan Putt at Echo Contemporary Art. (Photo courtesy of Leia Genis) It is almost as if something exploded. Bits of steel wire support panes of colored resin ranging in form from curvilinear to rectilinear, enclosed to splayed out — these fragments are skeletal structures as porous as breezeways. With such thin elements comprising them, each composition feels nearly weightless, like a balloon of air that’s batted around in a game.  This near immateriality is intentional, described by artist Aaron Kagan Putt in the text for his solo exhibition Light Gathers at the Edge at Echo Contemporary…

Over the past year or so, the most popular recurring feature on ScreenCrush by a fairly wide margin has been a series of movie reviews co-written by one or both of my daughters. When a big studio releases a film for children (and the press screening isn’t too late in the evening on a school night) I bring them along, load them up with popcorn and Icees, and then record whatever conversation emerges organically from the film on our trip home from the theater.I love doing these pieces because I genuinely love hearing my kids’ perspectives on movies, and also because they’re a lot easier…

On Monday, the UK parliament will debate whether sponsorship and advertising by fossil fuel companies should be made illegal. The move comes after a petition calling to ban such deals—like the £50 million ($63.3 million) partnership between energy giant BP and the British Museum—collected more than 100,000 signatures. (MPs are obliged to debate in parliament the topic of a petition if it is signed by more 100,000 members of the public.)Those campaigning for the change argue that the government should prohibit the promotion of coal, oil, and gas companies due to their role in exacerbating climate change. In 2003 the…

The opening of “Ballard” drops us into the action, calling to mind the brooding in medias res that kicked off the hit Idris Elba series “Luther.” Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) is at the tail end of a grueling case, already at odds with her colleagues over her refusal to back down or be silenced. Yet, while a comparison to the British procedural initially seems apt, “Ballard” looks and feels more like the legal thrillers of the 1990s. Not that it’s dated, but there’s the same stylized tension, radiating a sense of visual heat and internal volatility. The show’s Los…
