As a jewelry collector, I have an ebb-and-flow relationship with adornment. I buy some pieces, knowing I’m stewarding them until the time comes to pass them on to someone else. Others I’ve cherished for years and years, and they’ll be staying with me for quite some time to come. It’s true that I’ve been known to gravitate toward a few specific brands like Napier, Schreiner, and Dior, but what I keep for my collection varies widely. Many of the pieces I’ve held onto over time were gifts from loved ones, friends, or folks I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in…

Ancient weapons found at a burial site in DenmarkImage Source: Vejle Museums via Arkeonews Archaeologists recently unearthed weapons buried approximately 1,500 years ago in Denmark. The weapons were found during a project to expand a roadway to three lanes. The weapons were found at a burial site and may have been produced during the region’s Iron Age, 1,500 to 2,000 years ago. Based on their findings, archaeologists indicated that the burial site may have belonged to a chieftain. They noted that there were enough weapons at the site to equip a small army. In addition to the weapons, archaeologists found…

Courtesy of the Fondation Cartier.Colombian artist Olga de Amaral first discovered her love for textiles in the folds of her mother’s handiwork. Born in Bogotá in 1932, she was the eldest of eight siblings.“I have a memory…that stayed in my mind: my mother caressing various types of fabrics, such as ruanas or blankets,” said Amaral, referring to the poncho-like garment made from heavy wool common in the mountains of Colombia. “She would run her hand over them, and the materials would come into direct…

When you hear the phrase “’90s food,” what’s the first thing you think of?I’m going to guess it’s something wrapped in a plastic. Possibly frozen. There’s a good chance it was something that sort of resembled a fruit, and kind of tasted like fruit, but did not contain any actual fruit.Maybe you could get it at McDonald’s or Pizza Hut. Odds are it was either covered with cheese, stuffed with cheese, or both. (Dairy had a great ’90s. Dairy was big. Almond milk? Not so much.)Some of those classic ’90s favorites have shuffled off this mortal coil. (We’ll never forget you, Butterfinger BB’s. May flights of…

California’s sunshiny 70-degree weather set the tone for the 30th Critics Choice Awards held February 7 at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hanger. In covering the awards for the last ten years, this Chicago-based critic always looks forward to the warm weather, although this year was the best as there was also an electric atmospheric from talent eager to interact with critics, industry folk, and fans. The lively two-hour show even produced a considerable surprise ending for Sean Baker’s “Anora,” the Best Picture winner that took home the top prize despite not winning a single other award. “Wicked” won Best Director…

Sotheby’s laid down a marker in the Middle East on Saturday evening by hosting Saudi Arabia’s first major art auction. The results were like the two-part evening sale’s lineup: a mixed bag. The house took in $17.3 million (estimate: $14 million–$20 million) across 117 lots, with works of fine art, luxury objects, and sports memorabilia among them. However, the value of the house’s foray into the desert kingdom was never going to be confined to the depth of bidding alone. The historic outdoor auction served as a portal into the Saudi art and luxury markets (terra incognita for international auction houses), and…

You could say that the 1960s was a Technicolor revolution. Everything got brighter. While color TV existed in the 1950s, it was still relatively rare. Color films were around, but bringing color into everyday homes made everything feel brighter, bolder, and more alive.Groovy ’60s Threads and Far-Out FashionsThe fashions got funkier, er, groovier, than the greaser and teeny-bopper trends of the ’50s, and the music got louder — both with volume and messages — as the youth of the day rallied for peace.RELATED: From Grungy to Groundbreaking: Reliving the ’90s in Iconic PhotosTin can rollers were the ’60s equivalent to a life…

Excess is sorely needed in today’s cultural landscape. Maximalism in American cinema today is often regulated to a muted kind of spectacle, rendered in ugly computer-generated action sequences and amorphous color palettes that soften the impact of blockbuster films. There is a distinct absence of the kind of work Joel Schumacher mastered and brought to the masses. To enjoy Schumacher’s films is to revel in excess, to celebrate a distinctly queer sensibility that relishes maximalism, no matter what genre it was applied to. Across films like “Batman Forever,” “The Lost Boys,” and his adaptation of “Phantom of the Opera” (which…
