One of the figurines found by archaeologists in Israel.Image Source: Dafna Gazit/Israel Antiquities Authority via Live Science. Archaeologists recently unearthed ancient figurines in Israel cemetery tombs near an excavation site, according to Live Science. The figurines may have been crafted approximately 1,500 years ago and were likely worn as pendants, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) noted in a report. They may depict the ancestors of Africans who converted to Christianity and moved to Israel. “It is possible that the figures represent ancestors, and thus they reflect traditions passed down from generation to generation — even after the adoption of the…
Tom Quinn and Neon have accomplished something that even Miramax couldn’t in its prime of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, when they were snapping up Palme d’Or winners like “Pelle the Conqueror,” “Farewell My Concubine,” and “Pulp Fiction.” The company will have produced and/or distributed six Palme d’Or winners in a row, starting with 2019’s “Parasite” and continued this year with their purchase of Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident.” We thought we’d use this impressive streak to reminisce on our coverage of all six films, from their initial coverage at Cannes through their review on theatrical release,…

Richard Kerr star earrings with pavé set flat-backed rhinestones. The ‘80s were my era when it comes to ardently keeping up with fashion. I shopped till I dropped at the Galleria in Houston, which was a short walk from my office at the time. I even worked part-time in a couple of highly regarded ready-to-wear retailers back in the day, putting my employee discount to very good use. With fashion designers channeling the ‘80s for the past couple of years, the trend has garnered mixed reactions. Not everyone’s excited about this revival, but I have to say that most of…
ArtMaxwell RabbWhen Georges Seurat debuted A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte at the 1886 Impressionist exhibition in Paris, the reaction was far from positive. Art critic Arsène Alexandre coined the term “Pointillism” with a sneer, mocking the artist’s obsessive application of tiny dots of color. To skeptics, Seurat’s bathers and bourgeois strollers seemed stiff, even lifeless—as if his precision had drained the painting of humanity. Yet Pointillism has always been more than the sum of its parts. Seurat and fellow Neo-Impressionist Paul Signac were responding to new color theories and ideas about visual perception, proposing a…

But the wars waging in Gaza and Ukraine were felt powerfully throughout this edition—particularly given the tragic context of “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk,” made by Iranian director Sepideh Farsi and premiered in the independent ACID sidebar, which rarely makes headlines but screened what was undoubtedly the most important film of this year’s festival. Fatima Hassouna, a 25-year-old photojournalist and poet living in Gaza, dedicated her life to documenting civilian life under bombardment by the Israeli military, often exposing the impact of forced…
