A theme park is only as good as its rides. The shows and parades can be colorful and entertaining; the theming can be immersive; the food can be delicious (and sometimes covered in eerily convincing fake maggots). If the rides aren’t thrilling, the park will not survive.Thankfully, Universal’s newest Orlando theme park, Epic Universe, delivers in the ride department in a major way. Some seven years in development, the property is divided into five lands; four inspired by famous franchises (How to Train Your Dragon, Universal Monsters, Harry Potter, and Nintendo) and a central hub, Celestial Park, that connects them all via the “portals” that you enter to access…

Jodie Foster is known to be fluent in French, but Rebecca Zlotowski’s film “A Private Life,” showing out of competition, is said to mark her first time playing a leading role in the language. It’s a good fit, as her character, Lilian Steiner, is an American by birth. Lilian has lived in France for decades, but her capacity for reading nuances may still be slightly off. Then again, that blind spot may simply be a part of who she is. A psychiatrist, Lilian appears to have grown bored with her work; she takes a high-handed attitude when a patient stops…

ArtEmily SteerMaurizio Cattelan, America, 2016. Courtesy of the artist and Perrotin.Ever since Marcel Duchamp entered his readymade urinal Fountain into the 1917 Salon of the Society of Independent Artists, toilets have been a particularly powerful symbol in the art world. More recently, Maurizio Cattelan picked up on this trope with his satirical, solid gold loo, America (2016), which drew over 100,000 people to the Guggenheim in New York. These works may seem like, ahem, potty humor, but both are fundamentally concerned with the concept of art, turning everyday items connected to unhygienic bodily ablutions into luxurious sculptures. Today, many contemporary…
Hauser & Wirth announced on May 20th that it will represent the estate of American artist Susan Rothenberg, who passed away in 2020 at age 75. Next month, the gallery will feature Rothenberg’s work in its Art Basel presentation. In September, it will mount a solo exhibition of the artist’s work in New York. Rothenberg is perhaps best known for her large-scale horse paintings produced in the 1970s, which marked a bold return to figurative painting at a time when New York’s art scene was dominated by Minimalism and Conceptual art. Her work combined gestural abstraction with symbolic representation, capturing…
On Sunday, following his first Sunday mass as leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who marked the occasion with a gift: An image of the Madonna and child painted on a wood panel from an artillery crate used on the frontlines of its war against Russia. “For many peoples, the image of a mother with a child is a symbol of life that must be protected. Today, we presented Pope Leo XIV with a special icon—The Mother of God with the Infant, painted on a fragment of a box from…

Xarissa also has a growing personal collection and I’m so excited she has agreed to share it with…
Bruce Handy’s book, Hollywood High: A Totally Epic, Way Opinionated History of Teen Movies, is an absolute delight. It’s filled with fascinating details, first about the “invention” of the idea of the teenager as a separate way of life in the early 20th century and then as a consumer powerhouse and cultural force in the mid-century and beyond and then about the movies about and for teenagers, as a reflection and influence. He begins with Andy Hardy and “Rebel Without a Cause” and then takes us through the beach party movies, “American Graffiti,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” John Hughes, “Boyz in…
