In an age of absurdly serialized storytelling and streaming series that structure their seasons like a “ten-hour movie,” Buddha bless shows like “Poker Face.” Sure, there are the odd threads that pop up at the beginning of the season and tie together at the end, and the overarching struggles of itinerant human lie detector Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne, as acerbic as ever) to survive in a world surrounded by deceit and destruction. But in keeping with its nods to the rhythms of ’70s network television, each episode of Rian Johnson‘s reverse-detective show follows (more or less) a distinct and delicious…

The Art Institute of Chicago is contesting a New York court order to restitute Russian War Prisoner (1916), a drawing by Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele, to heirs of it’s original owner. The museum has secured a temporary stay while it pursues an appeal. The ruling, issued by Justice Althea Drysdale in April, follows a broader push by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office to return Nazi-looted artworks to relative of it’s original owner Fritz Grünbaum, a Jewish art collector who was interned in a Nazi concentration camp, where he died. What can we look to during these fraught times to keep our hope alive? Fred Rogers reminded us to “look for the helpers,” and there are four particular people who come to mind who fit that definition. They have contributed so much to our world for nearly a century, and those who are still with us have no plans to stop anytime soon. As vital programs and cultural institutions are being eliminated throughout the country, much like the superheroes during the climax of “Avengers: Infinity War,” it is more important for me than ever to elevate people who understand the…

Like many of her contemporaries, Kulumbegashvili’s films are marked by her childhood during the Georgian Civil War. Kulumbegashvili eventually moved to New York City, where she enrolled in Media Studies at The New School and later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Film Directing at the Columbia University School of the Arts. In 2014 her short film “Invisible…
Tamagotchis have been enticing children and adults since 1996. Tamagotchi will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2026. Any ‘90s kid (or their parents!) will have heard of these Japanese-produced “digital pets.” They were small, handheld devices containing pixelated animals. Tamagotchi collecting traces its roots back to the mid-1990s when Bandai released the first digital pet into a world primed for portable, interactive entertainment. Priced at $18 at launch, these egg-shaped devices captured imaginations by demanding constant care like feeding, playing with, and cleaning up after a virtual pet that could “die” if neglected. Original Tamagotchis could breathe their last in…
