The 12th edition of Expo Chicago opened to VIPs at noon on Thursday, following a vernissage brunch hosted by the fair and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s Women’s Board. The somewhat late opening time by art fair standards (most international fairs open at 10 or 11 a.m.) appeared to be a pragmatic choice. Attendance was light early on but picked up steadily through the afternoon, with opening day lasting until 8 p.m. Among the visitors were several ARTnews Top 200 Collectors, including Anita Blanchard and Martin Nesbitt, Lisa Goodman and Josef Vascovitz, and Alec and Jennifer Litowitz. Speaking to…
A 600-square-foot mural inspired by Swedish artist Hilma af Klint has been installed in the New York subway. The mosaic, commissioned by MTA Arts & Design, is the first public commission by Hilma’s Ghost, a feminist artist collective co-founded by Sharmistha Ray and Dannielle Tegeder. Titled Abstract Futures (2025), the mosaic is located at the 42nd Street/3rd Avenue entrance to Grand Central Station, serving the 7 train on the Flushing line. Drawing from tarot iconography and the artists’ ongoing interest in spiritual symbolism, the work is presented in three segments, each depicting a stage in a symbolic commuter journey. The…

There was perhaps an unexpected confidence to be observed when the 2025 edition of EXPO Chicago opened its VIP preview on Thursday, April 24th. Despite lingering anxieties over tariffs and broader stock market volatility, the mood at Navy Pier was one of relative buoyancy. “There’s always been a little bit of a fearlessness to Chicago collectors,” said Tony Karman, the long-time president of the fair. “They want to learn, and they’re not afraid to ask questions. They’ll take risks on new work.” In the…
Jean-Michel Basquiat’s market remains anything but quiet. This May, a rediscovered early painting by the artist will headline Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening Auction in New York with a $10 million to $15 million estimate. The untitled 1981 work hasn’t been seen publicly in 36 years. It was acquired in 1989 and has remained tucked away in the same private collection ever since—until now. Painted when Basquiat was just 20 years old, the five-foot-wide piece captures the heat and urgency of his breakout moment: a frenetic, mythic figure scrawled in oilstick on paper, hovering, as Jeffery Deitch once put it, between the street…

Fort Worth police have returned artworks by photographer Sally Mann seized by its forces from the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in January. The news was confirmed by the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC), the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), and the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas (ACLU of Texas) on Thursday. “It’s important to celebrate the return of these works,” Elizabeth Larison, director of NCAC’s art and culture advocacy program, said in a statement, “because it brings the last bit of closure to a sensationalized and protracted investigation, and also because it represents the rightful check…
Rainforest Cafe proved to be a dining and tourist destination with 59 restaurants at the height of its popularity.Today, that total has been whittled down to just 16 locations in the U.S.What Happened To Rainforest Cafe?Themed restaurants were once popular among families who wanted a side of entertainment with their meals. Places like Planet Hollywood and Medieval Times made eating out more of an experience instead of just another night out.And while there are certainly some themed restaurants operating today, some of the larger names in the game have pared down their locations to target high-tourist locations like Florida, Texas, or even…
There are many ways to define the current era of Hollywood cinema. But there’s no question that one sub-genre looms largest over the rest: Superheroes. Before the turn of the 21st century, Hollywood largely looked at comic books and their brightly-colored characters as exploitation fare. Even the occasional blockbuster adaptation, like 1978’s Superman or 1989’s Batman, did little to alter the general perception that comics were pow-biff-zap kids stuff, and no matter how much money you threw at them, that’s all that would ever be.The early 2000s, and movies like X-Men and Spider-Man, changed all that. Superheroes went from occasional novelties to the very center of mainstream…
