There’s nothing the internet loves more than turning a large group of subjective opinions into something that looks like a consensus. Take a bunch of reviews, assign each a numerical value, average it out, and boom — suddenly art is now math.Of course, not even the most widely beloved movie in history is widely beloved by every single person on the planet. The word “fuck” in giant neon letters, (FUCK, 2020), greets visitors to the Seattle Art Museum’s exhibition “Ai, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei,” the superstar artist’s largest United States retrospective ever. The glowing expletive about sums up the prevailing liberal mood in the country these days—though perhaps not in the way the show’s curator, Ping Foong, intended. Like the nearby sculpture of a human hand making the gesture, (Middle Finger, 2000), and the photographic series in which Ai gives the same to sites such as the Eiffel Tower and Tiananmen Square (“Study of Perspective,” 1995–2011), FUCK is…

“The hunt is almost as interesting as the acquisition.” — Peggy Guggenheim Collectors know the thrill of the search. For them, the process of finding art—the discovery, the story, the connection—is often as meaningful as the moment of acquisition itself. And here’s something worth considering: artists can approach building their collector base with that same intentional pursuit. Some ideas hit home not because they promise fast results, but because they speak to questions artists carry quietly: Who is my work really for? What does growth look like on my terms? Can I build a career without losing myself in the…
Guy Ullens, a Belgian billionaire who built up one of the most important collections of Chinese contemporary art in the world, has died at 90. The news was announced on social media by the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, which Ullens had cofounded. The museum did not provide a cause. “As one of the earliest international collectors to champion Chinese artists, Ullens helped bring global recognition to Chinese artists and their work,” the UCCA said on Instagram. “His dedicated efforts also shaped the foundation for UCCA’s growth into the institution we are today, in China and globally. ……
