How did Van die in Yellowjackets?
Melissa stabs Van to death in Yellowjackets.
In Season 2, Van was revealed to have been battling terminal cancer. She has managed to stay alive by pleasing the mysterious Wilderness. However, things take a dark turn in the latest episode when she appears to hallucinate her younger self, who offers her some advice. Her younger self encourages her to fight for her life. She warns her that death is near and that she should live the rest of her time heroically. After listening to her younger self, she leaves the hospital with Misty and Taissa. Along the way, they meet Melissa, who appears to have confronted Shauna. The group waits to identify the culprit responsible for Lottie’s demise. But the blame game between Shauna and Melissa continues.
While Misty heads to talk to Walter to find a solution, others decide on the next course of action. Amid their discussion, Melissa closes the fireplace flue, releasing the carbon monoxide, which fills the room with toxic air. After seeing Shauna and Taissa lying on the floor upon her return, Van attempts to rescue them. She then confronts Melissa and thinks that killing her might aid her survival and impress the mysterious Wilderness. But her kindness doesn’t allow her to kill Melissa. However, this allows Melissa to kill Van brutally.
Why did Melissa kill Van in Yellowjackets?
Melissa’s latest brutal actions showcase that she still hasn’t gotten over her traumatic past and experiences. She believes that killing Van is what the Wilderness wants, and she was aware that Van couldn’t get sinister towards her due to her kindness. However, it remains uncertain whether her violent actions are genuinely influenced by a supernatural force or just are a reflection of her true nature.
Earlier, Melissa tried to convince Van that the sacrifices and rewards weren’t real. Unconvinced, Van insists that “There’s a part of you that doesn’t quite know either.” Melissa persuades her that she is now a changed person and makes her realize her goodness. However, Van, who wanted to kill Melissa, is stopped by her kindness and regrets not being able to take violent actions. Melissa manipulates and tries to console her. Later, she brutally stabs her.
