On February 12, WorthPoint added 246,134 items to its database, bringing the total value to $15,302,413.52, or about $62.17 per item. It was also a day of big coins and good sales at iGavel! Let’s dive in and see what caught my eye!
High-Dollar Coins
In the coin department, an 1895 Silver Dollar, an NGC Cameo Proof MS 65, sold for $104,000 on eBay on 2/11/25. This price seems very reasonable, especially considering that Heritage sold a similarly graded coin for $109,500 back in 2010. It’s a rarified market at that price, but this coin is a solid investment for any collector. With only 880 proofs made that year and all general circulation coins believed to have been melted down, it’s a rare gem for anyone looking to complete their set.
Having owned one of these decades ago, my biggest nightmare was always wondering if the government melted them all down or if there were still bags of them out there like they found with the “lost” Carson City Dollars. I suppose this uncertainty fuels a market of buyers and sellers, always hoping to strike it rich with a rare find. Either way, the market for these proof coins is always buzzing, making it an exciting time for collectors.
Key Date Coin had some impressive rare coins in their latest sale, with the top five lots bringing in over $125,000. The most expensive was an MS 63 Gold $5 Coin, which sold for $29,500. This coin is incredibly rare in nearly impossible-to-find condition, and finding one in a mint state is even more exceptional. Another standout was a 1918/17 almost uncirculated silver quarter, a tough find in high-grade condition. This particular coin was originally dated 1917 and later overstamped by the mint to change it to 1918, making it an interesting “overdate” mint error. It sold for $21,240, showing how valuable these unique pieces can be.
Rare and Elegant
iGavel was at it again, selling some fantastic Chinese pieces, with the top five lots bringing in nearly $135,000. The most expensive item was a small white jade-covered box that fetched $46,251.25. This finely carved piece, with a stone of even pale green color, was a real standout. Another remarkable piece was a Chinese Celadon Jade crab, which sold for $21,250. The crab, almost white and eight inches wide, was a true beauty despite some chips and rubs on the stand. These items captured the elegance and rarity that make Chinese jade so sought after by collectors.
Exotic Yet Beautiful
Lastly, for something cool, iconic, and a little odd, a Cartier Panthere ring sold at Cadmore’s Couture Auction for $19,380. This modern, exotic piece was designed in the filigree form of a panther head, with black lacquer accents and striking green gemstone eyes. At about 80% of retail, I’d call this a solid deal for both the buyer and seller. Crafted from 18K yellow gold, it featured a 10mm wide band and a 15mm top height, making it a bold statement piece. The ring also came with a gift box, and with a total weight of 53.2 grams, it was certainly a piece to remember.
