Sean Penn recently opened up about director Woody Allen, and said that he would work with him again if given the chance.
What did Sean Penn say about Woody Allen?
Speaking during a recent appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast, Penn — who worked with Allen on 1999’s Sweet and Lowdown — said that he would work with Allen again “in a heartbeat,” despite the director having been accused of sexual abuse by his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow.
“I love that movie. I’d work with him in a heartbeat if it was the right thing,” Penn said (via Variety). He went on to talk about Allen’s “bad rep,” and said he can’t be 100% sure anything did or didn’t happen, but doesn’t trust the people who are telling him stories.
“Do I think he has a bad rep? Look, with these things… I don’t know anyone well enough to say 100% this didn’t happen or that didn’t happen or something,” said Penn. “God forbid you’re wrong and there is a victim involved, right? I haven’t read everything, but the stories are mostly told by people who I would not trust with a dime. It seems so heavily weighted in that way.”
Theroux brought up the fact that the main source of allegations came from Allen’s adopted children, Penn brought up his experience listening to talks from various psychologists.
“I am not aware of any clinical psychologist or psychiatrist or anyone I ever heard talk about the subject of pedophilia that in 80 years of life it only happens once. I am not aware of that,” Penn said. “When people try to associate his much younger girlfriends, right or wrong is not the conversation here. Post-puberty consensual stuff is a different conversation.”
In 2014, journalist Ronan Farrow and Mia Farrow spoke out against Allen, with Ronan writing a column detailing some of the allegations against Allen from Dylan. Allen denied the allegations, and has not worked in Hollywood since the allegations came back to the surface in 2018.
