Imagine the Thrill
When looking at trends in the collectibles market, Goldin Auctions is always a strong indicator. In their latest sale, a 2024 Panini Prizm White Sparkle 1/1 Caitlin Clark card, graded PSA Gem Mint 10 with a perfect 10 autograph, sold for an eye-popping $158,600. That kind of result makes you imagine the thrill of pulling it from a pack—what a moment that must’ve been! Clark, already a dominant force in the WNBA, has also become a major player in the card world. This card is the fourth-highest Caitlin Clark card Goldin has sold, with the top being a $366,000 Gold Vinyl version in March. The top five cards in the auction brought in $267,000, contributing to a total sale of $1.016 million across all lots, for an average of $706.07 per item. Caitlin Clark is one of the hottest names in the hobby right now.
The Standout Piece
Harrington’s of Toronto hosted a small but impressive watch auction, featuring just thirty-one lots that totaled $316,093—an average of $10,196 per watch. The standout piece was an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Ref. 5402BA, an early yellow gold version of the iconic Gerald Genta design, which brought in $71,067.92. Originally released in 1977 and produced in limited quantities, this model remains highly collectible due to its rarity and elegant execution. Featuring the signature Petite Tapisserie dial and ultra-thin calibre 2121 movement, it embodies both technical precision and design legacy. It’s always great to see a focused, boutique-style sale like this succeed in a highly competitive watch market.
Unusual and a Bargain
One interesting item that quietly slipped through the cracks was a striking display of antique swords offered by North Coast Auctions. The lot featured four French and German bayonets along with a French artillery short sword, all mounted on a walnut plaque shaped like a shield. What made it even more compelling was the inclusion of a WWI-era German Pickelhaube helmet crest, which was affixed to the short sword—an unusual and valuable touch. The entire display sold for $353.83, a bargain considering the crest alone could justify that price. Hopefully, the crest was mounted to allow easy removal without damaging the sword, should the new owner choose to break up the ensemble. Visually, though, it made for an impressive and conversation-starting wall piece.
Not to Everyone’s Taste
In a case that proves the old saying “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” Edward’s Auction & Realty sold a Mount Washington Royal Flemish vase for $586.50. With its extremely elongated neck and unusual proportions, this vase might not appeal to every collector’s taste, but it still brought a solid price, roughly half of its retail value. Mount Washington Glass, founded in 1837 and later merged with Pairpoint in 1894, remains highly collectible and respected for its innovation in art glass. While this particular piece may have been an “ugly duckling” in form, its pedigree and craftsmanship helped it stand out. Credit goes to the auction house for correctly identifying and marketing what they had.
