For forty years, Anna Wintour has been at the helm of Vogue magazine, often referred to as “the Fashion Bible.” As the head of editorial content, she has guided the magazine to prominence in the fashion industry. In late June, Wintour announced that she would be stepping down as the editor-in-chief of American Vogue.
Although she will no longer serve as the editor-in-chief of American Vogue, she will remain involved with various global initiatives of other publications produced by the parent company, Conde Nast. Wintour will increase her role with other publications under their brand as the company’s Chief Content Officer and global editorial director.
Wintour’s philanthropic efforts include the establishment of the Met Gala, which raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The museum has confirmed that Wintour will continue to be involved with the gala.
Wintour’s impact on fashion has reshaped the industry, and with her moving on from her long reign at Vogue, some items from her career look good to fans who collect fashion ephemera and other memorabilia.
The first issue of the magazine published under Wintour’s leadership was the November 1988 issue. A copy recently sold in an online marketplace auction for $1700, which shows keen interest in items that commemorate her time as fashion royalty.
Other collectibles will likely start to show up, including autographed photos, magazines, and especially some pieces that echo her classic Georgian Collet necklaces, which she wears regularly. She often wears more than one necklace at a time, coordinating the stones and colors as only she can. The necklaces have become synonymous with Wintour, along with her signature bob and black sunglasses.
Wintour’s pieces are antiques and, as such, very valuable, but J. Crew and other manufacturers produced similar copies. The style of the necklaces is also referred to as “Riviere,” which refers to the chain of singular stones that “flow” like a river. Collectors should look for vintage pieces in this style with search terms like “Georgian collet” and “Anna Wintour necklace,” as some recent listings show.
