The current rage for brick and mortar jewelry stores has been hosting “piercing parties” where a professional piercer arrives with a slew of women waiting to get punctured, all in the name of a new earring. There are parts of ears that never knew the sight of an earring until recently: tragus, rook, snug, forward helix, orbital, transverse lobe…all names of different types of piercings in very particular spots on the ear. If you thought a typical lobe piercing was daring, you haven’t seen this photo that maps out the unique areas and names of each. The look is stunning, with equally matched edginess to it, but it does take some guts.

Dangles: Any earring that hangs below the earlobe itself. These can come in many forms and styles, like chandelier earrings, waterfall style, and fringe earrings. They usually have movement to them and are bolder than a typical stud earring.
Ear Cuffs: A piece of jewelry for the upper portion of one’s ear. It is usually shaped like a ring, with a portion of it open to fit your ear into it without needing a piercing. These are great because they can be positioned anywhere on your ear and can even be stacked for a major look.
Ear Jackets: A piece of jewelry that attaches onto your earring simply by looping it onto your earring post. These often dangle, fan outward, or ever-so-slightly peek out from your lower lobe. Ear jackets easily enhance stud earrings, giving them a whole new look.
Ear Climbers: An earring that is elongated so when positioned on your ear, creates the illusion that it is “climbing” up your ear. Designers have created all kinds of styles of varying sizes; some are subtle and feature a single wisp of diamonds climbing up the ear, and some are extravagant and cover the entire ear. These usually require one hole, but look as though you have several.
Ear Hangers: Described as the bluetooth ear piece, but done in gold and sometimes diamonds! This piece of jewelry tucks behind your ear and swoops under and upward. Surprisingly comfortable and an easy addition, with no holes required! Take note: you may have to have a jeweler bend for a perfect fit, as ears come in many shapes and sizes, with most jewelers making one size fits all.
Threader Earrings: Delicate gold chain you thread through your ear holes—creates an elegant yet trendy look. Several photos on Instagram have gone viral featuring a threader earring weaved through several holes in one lobe!
