The first streaming service series ever broadcast in the United States was Netflix’s dark, no-holds-barred political drama “House of Cards.” Its arrival seeded the idea that these new platforms could offer stories and execution that rivalled that of cable stalwarts like HBO and Showtime. Prime Video had an uneven start, with series like “Bosch” and “Alpha House,” but won accolades and acclaim for “One Mississippi” and “Transparent.” For a time, the collective output of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon did provide television that seemed beyond the scope and interests of broadcast television. It gives me no pleasure to report that the…

A friend once shared with me: “Good writing … cuts us open. It exposes, in a beautiful twist, the reader as much as the author. And the best writing, following the incision, knits us back together more truly, more fully healed in some way.” I thought of his words after watching writer, director, and star Eva Victor’s “Sorry, Baby.” Trenchant yet tender, it’s the type of debut that harmonizes the tragicomic into a truthful tune, one which honestly depicts the non-linear path of healing. Victor stars as Agnes, a university professor who enjoys her bucolic life in academia but wrestles…
Monica Campana, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Living Walls, poses in her Poncey-Highland home studio. (Photographs by Isadora Pennington) In the early aughts, Atlanta’s art scene was on the cusp of an explosion of creativity, marked by plentiful DIY art spaces and innovative arts initiatives across the city. Up-and-coming artists cultivated an altogether new creative ecosystem through festivals, pocket galleries and a burgeoning street art scene. One such creative undertaking that got its start in those days was Living Walls, the City Speaks, which was founded in 2009 by local creatives Monica Campana and Blacki Migliozzi. They dreamed up a…
Ahead of Sotheby’s modern and contemporary evening sale in London on Tuesday, expectations were tempered. No one was expecting fireworks, for a variety of reasons. Last June, the house sold Jean-Michel Basquiat’s triptych Portrait of the Artist as a Young Derelict for $20.2 million—just above its low estimate but well below the $30 million valuation Christie’s had placed on the work just two years earlier, before withdrawing the lot. And then there’s the broader backdrop: Christie’s scrapped its own June evening sales last year, severely curtailing what had long been the traditional post-Basel finale. Last month’s marquee New York sales…

ScreenCrush’s pick for the best movie of 2025 so far is Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s terrifying and thoughtful take on the vampire genre. And to our pleasant surprise, the film was a pretty sizable hit for an original concept; the film wound up earning more than $360 million in theaters worldwide. A new movie that wasn’t a sequel or a remake or based on a comic and people wanted to see it! What a concept. If you missed it in theaters you’ll get another shot in July, as that’s when Sinners will begin streaming on Max (HBO Max? Max? Max HBO? I’ve lost track.) There’s not…

Courtesy of ILY2.No seated dinner, no hushed white-cube reverence—just an ice cream truck and places to sit. Such was the scene at the opening of ILY2’s New York outpost. An emerging maverick in the art world, the Portland-founded gallery hosted the block party–style event in Chinatown with a deliberately welcoming attitude.“I think [we’re] taking out some of that intimidation and stuffiness and trying to create a sense of care and playfulness while still taking what we do really seriously,” said Rosie Motley, director of the…

“Everywhere I Go Is Home” is on view now at Huagabrooks Gallery in the Historic Sweet Auburn District. (Photo courtesy of John Stephens) Home, both as a concept and as a place, has long been the subject of artistic inquiry. From Carrie Mae Weems’ Kitchen Table series to Do Ho Suh’s ongoing series of textile reproductions of domestic spaces, “home” takes many forms and is interpreted many ways. Home can be a place to rest your head or a gathering place for family and loved ones. It is sometimes the place one feels most comfortable while also the site of…
