It’s been almost 30 years since Tom Cruise first played secret agent Ethan Hunt in 1996’s Mission: Impossible. For a film based on a long-dead television show, the M:I franchise has shown remarkable staying power — and so has Cruise. To put it into perspective, consider this: In the 30 years after the first James Bond movie, Dr. No, four different men played James Bond and the fifth was about to make his debut. By the time three decades had passed, the first Bond, Sean Connery, had long since retired as the character; that was around the time he played Indiana Jones’ bumbling father in Indiana Jones and the…

Money isn’t everything. Sure, it can provide a film with the resources to take its production around the world, and to fill its frames with gorgeous international scenery, A-list actors, and the biggest special effects imaginable. But you know what they say about how bigger isn’t always better. Sometimes a cliché becomes a cliché because it’s true. And here is the proof: 15 of the worst films ever made with the highest budgets of all time. Each one of these movies, ranked from occasionally watchable to borderline deadly, cost at least $200 million to make (without adjusting for inflation). Each and every one of these…

Art MarketTom SeymourExterior view of Photo London 2024. Courtesy of Photo London. Photo London returns to Somerset House for its tenth edition at a pivotal moment for the photography market. Founded in 2015, Photo London emerged as lens-based fine art was gaining recognition as a collectible asset. Previously considered niche, photography was asserting itself within the city’s art ecosystem. Larger, Mayfair-centric commercial galleries were beginning to dedicate significant space to photographic works, while smaller, photography-focused dealers such as Atlas Gallery, Huxley-Parlour, and Flowers were enjoying rising profiles.Today, as the fair marks a decade of operations, photography is firmly entrenched in…

Sotheby’s modern evening sale fetched $186.4 million on May 13th. The sale’s most highly anticipated lot—Alberto Giacometti’s Grande tête mince (1955), estimated in excess of $70 million—failed to attract a buyer. The Giacommeti work—a bronze bust of the artist’s brother Diego—saw bidding stall around the $64 million mark, according to The Art Newspaper. With no pre-sale guarantee for the work, it failed to sell, reportedly drawing gasps from those in attendance. Of the 65 works offered on the evening, Sotheby’s reported an 83% sell-through rate, which excludes five withdrawn lots. The sale’s leading lot was René Magritte’s La Traversée difficile…

It seemed like an odd decision to do away with the name HBO Max when Warner Bros. Discovery announced the move in the spring of 2023. HBO was one of the most famous and respected brands in television, known for its high-quality TV shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, and Game of Thrones. All of the HBO content people liked remained on the streaming service (well, at least the stuff WBD didn’t pull down from the service as a cost-cutting measure) but from early 2023 to now it was just known as “Max.”Not anymore. In a big about face, Warner Bros. Discovery announced today that they were restoring HBO…

After a three-year wait, Ironheart is finally ready to premiere on Disney+.Technically, it’s been even longer than that. Marvel’s Kevin Feige first announced the series way back in December of 2020. But it was in the fall of 2022 that the Ironheart character first debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the film, a young tech genius named Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne) gets caught in the middle of the war between Wakanda and Atlantis, and then creates her own Iron Man-esque suit of armor.Ironheart picks up the story from there — and, as the first trailer for the…

The 78th Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday with two films—one that’s 100 years old, and another that seems likely to be forgotten by the end of the week. The official opening-night selection was “Leave One Day,” which on paper was a bold choice. It’s unusual for the festival to hand over this marquee slot to a first feature (the director, Amélie Bonnin, expanded it from a short that won her a César in 2023), let alone one without big stars or an obviously splashy hook. Cannes has had an on-and-off tradition of opting for terrible curtain-raisers, but usually…

Sotheby’s modern art evening sale in New York on Tuesday night collectively hammered at $152 million, or $186.4 million with buyer’s premium, across 60 lots. Fifty works sold, for a sell-through rate of 83.3 percent. Roughly 40 percent of the lots exceeded their high estimates, with half appearing at auction for the first time. The result was strong given a cooling art market as of late, though the night’s high-profile miss cast a long shadow. Among the top lots was Pablo Picasso’s Homme assis, which sold for $15.1 million against an estimate of $12 million to $18 million. (All prices listed…
