The funds will be disbursed to state councils in all 50 states and six jurisdictions. The news comes almost a month after the Trump administration said that it would cut $65 million from the budget of the National Endowment of the Humanities, which was earmarked for the funding of these state councils as well as additional grants. Because of the abruptness of these cuts, many state councils were expected…

Chicago artist Art Green, a founding member of the Imagist art group the Hairy Who, died on April 14th at 83. Garth Greenan Gallery, which represents the artist, announced his death on Instagram, writing, “His legacy lives on in his playful and paradoxical paintings, and in the generation of artists shaped by his decades of dedicated teaching.”Green filled his paintings with unruly, contradictory images, layering motifs such as ice cream cones, flames, or dancing legs, with kaleidoscopic patterns and sharp-edged geometries. In the 1960s, he emerged alongside School of the Art Institute of Chicago peers James Falconer, Gladys Nilsson, Jim…

Every superhero carries some sort of emotional baggage. Superman’s parents died when his home planet exploded. Batman’s mother and father were killed by a mugger. Spider-Man lost his parents and his uncle. Wolverine doesn’t even remember his family, or anything else about his former life — except the torturous experiments that gave him an unbreakable skeleton. Show me a long-running comic-book character, I’ll show you someone defined by a tragic backstory. But so often that’s where it ends; as backstory underpinning selfless deeds. Few comic-book movies make their subjects’ trauma as central to their text as Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, in which the heroes’ fundamental struggle is less against the forces of evil than the psychic scars left by their painful pasts. The…

The body suit worn by Lynda Carter in Season Two of Wonder Woman is getting a lot of attention in the auction at Julien’s in Los Angeles on May 7-8, 2025. Image source: Julien’s Auctions Whether your favorite shows were streaming and enjoyed on binges or dropped once a week on broadcast television, everyone has that one show or cast of characters they follow closely. One of my prized possessions when I was nine was an I Dream of Jeannie hat complete with a fake ponytail. I used to run around wearing it and blinking, but somehow, it never worked…

Every April, artists and art supporters gather at the 40-year-old Enzian Theatre in North Orlando (and a nearby multiplex), a place of great comfort in troubling times. It’s tempting to call the beloved Florida Film Festival an oasis, given the increasingly anti-art era in which we find ourselves in the 2020s, but one should really consider the meaning of that word. It’s not just a comfortable, safe space in a desert—it’s a place that gives visitors sustenance and the ability to survive outside it. Florida has that vibe without underlining or highlighting its obvious importance. It is powerful through action,…

At any given film festival, I look forward to discovering the thematic connections between the films that have been programmed. Take last year’s Chicago Critics Film Festival, whose opening night film, “Sing Sing,” and closing night film, “Ghostlight,” both ruminated on the healing power of community theater. The beauty of the second edition of MUBI Fest in Chicago, which took place on April 26-27, lies in the fact that its theme, “Lost in Translation,” was revealed from the start, tying together all of its programming. The fun was deducing how its live concert and seven programmed films explored different facets…
