A new Superman theory speculates that the Ultraman in the movie might not be a clone, but something else entirely. Although Ultraman has been featured prominently in some of the promotional materials for the film, there is a lot of mystery around the character.
Martian Manhunter is Superman’s Ultraman in new theory
A theory reportedly going around on the internet appears to suggest that Ultraman in James Gunn’s Superman movie might not be a clone, even though that’s what earlier speculations claimed. According to this theory, Ultraman is Martian Manhunter, who is one of the seven original members of the Justice League of America in the DC Comics.
In the promotional materials for Superman, Ultraman mostly has their face covered with a mask. However, in the Tickets on Sale Now trailer, the viewers can see an unmasked Ultraman attacking David Corenswet’s Clark Kent / Superman with heat vision at 1:09.
It may surprise some DC fans that Martian Manhunter / J’onn J’onzz possesses heat vision in the comics, alongside other abilities often associated with Superman, including flight and super strength, durability, stamina, and speed. He also has shape-shifting, invisibility, and telephatic powers in the comics.
If Ultraman indeed turns out to be Martian Manhunter in Superman, his appearance can potentially set up a future DCU Justice League project, given how closely he is associated with the iconic superhero collective.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Superman director and the DCU co-head James Gunn was asked whether it’s correct to presume that Ultraman was Luthor’s “attempt” to make “a Superman kind of figure.”
In response, Gunn said, “It’s close. Yeah, I think that’s close. Ultraman is sort of Lex’s thug and is pretty powerful,” indicating that there might be more to the story. At the time of this article’s composition, DC Studios hasn’t revealed further information about the character.
The cast of Superman includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, among others. The movie debuts in US theaters on July 11, 2025.
