What does Burt and Fields’ Attila nickname mean in Severance Season 2?
Severance Season 2 Episode 6 is titled Attila. Viewers got to know the meaning of the word from Burt and Irving’s dinner scene with Burt’s husband, Fields. Attila historically refers to the ruler of the Huns who reigned from 434 to early 453. In Severance, Fields and Burt inform Irving that they switched their nicknames from Hon (short for honey, an endearing term widely used to address loved ones) to Attila around 10 years back, as per Burt.
Fields argued that it was actually 20 years back when they were having drinks with Burt’s Lumon partner. The information is a crucial plot point, as Irving quickly countered back, saying Lumon started the severance 12 years back. Burt agrees with him, implying that Fields had too much to drink, hence the mistake.
From the viewers’ perspective, Attila could signify Burt’s ties to Lumon if he is connected to the industry from 20 years ago. The historical reference could also play a role.
