‘Did Blake Lively Win Her Lawsuit?’ trend explained
Blake Lively did not win a lawsuit against anyone. Instead, the court dismissed a $400 million defamation and extortion case filed against her by Justin Baldoni. On June 9, 2025, Judge Lewis J. Liman ruled that Lively’s sexual harassment claims were legally protected and did not meet the criteria for defamation.
Lively’s lawyers called the ruling a “total victory” and said it vindicated her. In her Instagram story following the dismissal, Lively wrote that she was “more resolved than ever to continue to stand for every woman’s right to have a voice in protecting themselves, including their safety, their integrity, their dignity and their story.”
Judge Liman found that Lively’s statements were part of a formal legal complaint, which are privileged under U.S. defamation law. He stated, “The Wayfarer Parties (Baldoni and his studio) have not alleged that Lively is responsible for any statements other than the statements in her … complaint, which are privileged.”
The legal dispute began after Lively filed a complaint in December 2024 during the production of It Ends With Us. She alleged a hostile work environment. According to her, Baldoni showed her nude images, talked about his pornography addiction and sexual experiences, and made comments about her weight. She included 22 pages of text messages in her filing. She also said the production team held a meeting on set in response to her allegations.
Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios claimed Lively and others defamed him. The judge ruled Baldoni’s team failed to prove that Lively, Ryan Reynolds, publicist Leslie Sloane, or The New York Times acted with “actual malice” or made unprotected statements.
Lively’s lawyers said they will seek attorney’s fees, treble damages, and punitive damages for what they called “abusive litigation.” Baldoni has not publicly commented on the ruling.
