Music is mourning the loss of one of its longest-living legends, as Brian Wilson passed away. The founder and lead vocalist of The Beach Boys died this past week at 82.
The Beach Boys formed in 1961, with Wilson, his two brothers Dennis and Carl, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. The group found success quickly, hitting number one on the charts with Surfin’ U.S.A. in 1963. Wilson wrote several of the Beach Boys’ greatest hits, including I Get Around, Surf City and Help Me, Rhonda.
However, the group’s success was relatively short-lived as Wilson retreated from the public spotlight, partly due to mental health issues and wanting to focus on songwriting and production. He remained involved with The Beach Boys through their celebrated Pet Sounds album, but his time following was intermittent.
Wilson’s musical catalogue also includes solo efforts like Smile, released in 2004.
In 1988, Wilson and the other founding members of the Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and he was later individually recognized by the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
