Metal detectorist Arjen Spießwinkel recently discovered several Viking Age artifacts along the banks of the Schlei River near Haithabu, Germany, according to Archaeologie Online. These artifacts included coins, a whetstone, and a pendant that could be a cross or part of Thor’s hammer.
Following the discovery, Spießwinkel notified the Schleswig-Holstein State Archaeological Office (ALSH) about his discovery. Since then, ALSH officials have examined the scene where Spießwinkel unearthed the artifacts.
“We are always happy when one of the [metal] detectorists calls us because he or she has discovered a hoard,” ALSH spokesperson Birte Anspach told All That’s Interesting.
Approximately 200 artifacts were discovered. These date back to the 10th century, and many of them are made out of silver.
Furthermore, the whetstone that was found indicates that there may have been a settlement in place in the area during the 10th century.
Meanwhile, the pendant that was found could be a Christian artifact.
“Although there are individual finds with Christian symbols—for example in graves or among the settlement layers—the widespread adoption of Christianity did not take place until many decades later,” Alspach said.
Alternatively, All That’s Interesting reported that the pendant could be an unfinished part of Thor’s hammer and a sign that some locals worshipped Norse gods.
ALSH officials continue to evaluate the Viking artifacts and their origins. However, Anspach stated that it is unknown why the artifacts were buried and what motivated someone to put them in the ground.
