Metal-detecting is a great way for amateur treasure hunters to make their dreams come true. Consider the story of a metal-detecting group that recently found coins dating back to the 17th century in eastern Poland.
According to TVP World, members of this metal-detecting group unearthed thirteen coins, known as boratynki, in the Polish town of Janów. The coins were found within centimeters of one another.
“Boratynki occur quite often, but usually there are only one or two, located far apart from each other,” said Mateusz Sygacz, a member of the metal-detecting group. “The most interesting thing is that so many coins were lying so close together.”
Following this discovery, group members canvassed one hundred meters as they searched for more coins. Ultimately, they discovered 442 copper coins produced between 1659 and 1668. As such, the discovery represents the largest of its kind in Poland’s Mazowieckie province.
TVP World reported that the coins were minted in both the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. They are named after Tytus Livius Boratini, who managed a mint in Kraków.
Meanwhile, Sygacz noted that the coins may have belonged to an infantryman or someone who wanted to hide them for safekeeping. “We’ll likely never know for sure,” Sygacz said.
At this point, the coins are being stored at a regional heritage conservator’s office. Additional research is underway to learn more about the coins and why they were buried. It is unknown if the coins are legal or counterfeit and how much they may be worth.
