On February 7, 2025, Sotheby’s in New York auctioned a 1714 Stradivarius violin, known as the Joachim-Ma. The exceptional instrument was tipped to become the most expensive ever sold. Ultimately, it went for a staggering $11.25 million. While it didn’t break the record held by the Lady Blunt, another Stradivarius, it nevertheless became one of the most expensive violins ever sold, proving that these violins remain highly treasured by collectors and musicians.

Antonio Stradivari and his Violins

Antonio Stradivari was born in Cremona in Northern Italy around the year 1644. He is widely regarded as one of the best luthiers, or string instrument makers, in history. During his lifetime, he crafted over a thousand instruments, around 650 of which still survive to this day.

Stradivari’s violins are considered among the highest quality instruments ever made, said to have a unique tonal quality that some believe cannot be replicated even by modern methods. There are countless theories as to why this is. Some argue that it’s down to his secret techniques; others have even theorized that it’s down to the wood he used being from Europe’s “Little Ice Age,” a period of unusually long winters that led trees to grow more slowly, giving their wood unique properties. Whatever the case, the violins remain extraordinarily valuable historical artifacts and are still played in performances to this day.

The period from the 1690s through to around 1725 is widely seen as Stradivari’s “Golden Period” for violin design, during which his techniques markedly improved, leading to his best work. The Joachim-Ma violin falls squarely in this period. The instrument is named for two famous former owners—Joseph Joachim (1831 – 1907) and Si-Hon Ma (1929 – 2009). Joachim was a close collaborator of Brahms, while Ma was one of the most celebrated violinists of the 20th century.

High Profile Violins

The Joachim-Ma is not the first Stradivarius to sell for millions. The Molitor, made in 1697—the very beginning of the “Golden Period”—sold for $3.6 million in 2010, the highest auction price for any instrument at that time. Today, the Molitor is owned by American violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, a highly accomplished musician who has used the Molitor during live performances.

The auction record set by Molitor was soon surpassed, however—the Lady Blunt sold for $15.9 million in 2011. The extraordinary price reflected the instrument’s quality and the fact that the auction was for charity, with proceeds going toward helping survivors of the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March of that year.

Like the Joachim-Ma, the Lady Blunt is named for a former owner–Lady Anne Blunt, a prolific horse breeder. Blunt was the daughter of the mathematician Ada Lovelace (often regarded as the first computer programmer in history) and the granddaughter of the famous poet Lord Byron. Blunt was primarily known for her work with horses–even becoming the first European woman to ride across the Northern Arabian desert–but she was also a trained violinist and acquired the Lady Blunt around 1864.

The Lady Blunt is considered to be among the best-preserved Stradivarius violins in existence because it is played relatively rarely. The only Stradivarius that rivals it is the “Messiah,” which is held in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England.

Cheaper Collecting Alternatives

While Stradivarius violins can cost millions and are the dream for many collectors, other antique violins are available, some for hundreds or tens of thousands of dollars.

Many later luthiers have attempted to emulate Stradivari’s style. A 1910 violin made by Carlo Giuseppe Oddone, modeled after Stradivari, sold for around $90,000 in 2021.

If you have enough cash to spare, you may even be able to own an 18th-century violin created by one of Stradivari’s contemporaries. A violin from around 1760 created by Michael Deconet sold for just over $40,000 a decade ago.

Collectors should be aware that thousands of copies of Stradivarius violins exist and have been mass-produced for centuries, especially in workshops in Germany and France over the 19th and 20th centuries. While some of these copies are superb violins, they are not true Stradivarius instruments. Beware of any sale claiming to be a true Stradivarius. Some will even come with fake labels of authenticity in Stradivari’s own style, usually including a year from the “Golden Period” to enhance their value, even if the violin was made in a different country many years later. These labels were often added innocently by German and French manufacturers to indicate the type of original violin they were copying, but deceptive modern sellers may try to pass these labels off as proof of authenticity when presenting the instrument as a true Stradivarius.

In many cases, only expert appraisers can confirm whether or not a violin is a genuine Stradivarius. Remember that all known surviving Stradivarius violins have been accounted for, so the chances of a legitimate one showing up for cheap in a small auction are vanishingly low.

For collectors who are aware of all this, however, these copies can be great collectibles in themselves and offer anyone on a tighter budget the chance to own a Stradivarius-style violin at a relatively cheap price. A 1936 Stradivarius copy sold for just over $1500 in 2021. Many others can go for far less, with even high-quality antiques going for less than a thousand dollars.

Replica Stradivarius violins offer collectors an opportunity to own a high-quality violin for a reasonable price.

Final Thoughts

The recent auction at Sotheby’s proves that the near-mythical status of Stradivarius violins remains strong. While only the very wealthy will be able to own a true Stradivarius, the extensive market of replicas offers any collector the chance to buy and sell impressive violins at reasonable prices.
