One of the most unique apothecary collections is going up for bid later in June.
As reported by the BBC, a collector who recreated a Victorian pharmacy in a Gloucestershire townhouse is putting his impressive collection up for grabs with The Cotswold Auction Company. The collection includes a full Victorian pharmacy with artifacts dating back to the 1880s, with a complete relocation of an original pharmacy.
“I found [it] in Upwell in the Fens, it had been in the same family for 150 years,” owner Darrin Baines told the BBC. “I went with a carpenter and a friend, and dismantled the shop myself.”
The auctioneer, Lindsey Braune, described the collection as “truly remarkable.” She went on to say, “This was clearly a labour of love, and we hope these fascinating objects find an equally loving new home.”
Baines was an apothecary collector for more than two decades, and when he moved to a larger home, he expanded his collection immensely.
“It (the move) allowed me to collect bigger items like whole pharmacy shops and big racks of pharmacy drawers and bottles,” he said. “There were two floors in my house that were basically a pharmacy museum. I always planned to show the world but always thought I needed something else before I could show it.”
Now moving to a smaller home, Baines plans to continue collecting, albeit with a different pursuit. “A pharmacy collection is a massive thing,” he said, “so I might collect matchboxes or something smaller again, like pins or badge lapels instead.”
