The legendary auction trail of Honus Wagner’s T206 baseball card took another step forward with a sale from Mile High Card Company.
This time, the copy up for grabs was a Sweet Caporal back version, which nabbed $1.98 million in the company’s Spring 2025 Auction, which closed on April 26.
The card, as described by Mile High, did not earn a grade from PSA due to alterations and restoration. The Colorado-based auction house noted in its auction description that the Wagner was first cleaned up with hand cutting by its original owner, before getting subsequent work done. “Since that alteration precluded the card from receiving a numerical grade, one of the previous owners decided to improve the aesthetics of the card by having the surface restored, removing the blemishes to make the Carl Horner-created image Wagner the focal point of the piece once again,” the company explained.
The sale was a second go-around for Mile High with this Wagner. The company previously sold the card in August 2023, with a realized price of $1.968 million. The auction house also sold the “Charlie Sheen” Wagner in March 2022 for just over $3 million.
